German Shepherds are loyal, confident, and highly intelligent dogs. They are known for their courage and are often used in police and military work, as well as service and therapy roles.
Despite their tough exterior, they are gentle family companions and very protective of their loved ones. They can be aloof with strangers but are not hostile unless provoked.
German Shepherds are high-energy dogs that require substantial daily exercise. They need at least 2 hours of physical and mental stimulation each day.
Activities like running, hiking, agility training, and obedience work are ideal. They excel in dog sports and need a job to do to stay happy and healthy.
German Shepherds have a double coat that sheds year-round and more heavily twice a year. Daily brushing during shedding season and 2-3 times weekly otherwise helps manage loose fur.
Bathe them every 3-4 months or as needed. Regular dental care, nail trimming, and ear checks are important for their overall health.
